A tracheal tube includes a proximal extension (16) between a flange member (14) and a connector (18). The extension (16) may allow for easier access to the connector (18). The extension (16) is reinforced to limit bending and kinking. Reinforcement may be accomplished by a helical element that is embedded in the extension (16), such as between an inner cannula (36) and an outer cover (46). The outer cover may be molded with a connector (18) after placement of the reinforcing member (40).
