<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data transmission device capable of appropriately detecting a failure generated in a transmission path without increasing costs and having any influences on original data transmission, and a data transmission method. <P>SOLUTION: A switching device 2, switching devices 4, and a master switching device 5 are connected by a ring-shaped transmission path 6. The master switching device 5 switches transmission paths when an error has been generated in the ring-shaped transmission path 6. Control devices 3 transmit transmission data to a controller device 1 at a constant cycle. The controller device 1 monitors a reception timing of the transmission data from the control devices 3 and determines that the transmission paths are switched by the master switching device 5 owing to changes of the reception timing.
