<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass material for press molding providing an optical element having a sufficient optical performance without surface cracks, cloudiness, scratches and the like even when the glass material contains an easily reducible component, and to provide an optical element having a sufficient optical performance without surface cracks, cloudiness, scratches and the like and a method for manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The glass material for press molding and the glass optical element each comprise a core portion composed of multicomponent optical glass and a composite surface layer covering at least a region serving as an optical functional surface of the core portion. The core portion is composed of optical glass which contains an easily reducible component and does not contain Pb. The composite surface layer includes a first surface layer which covers the core portion and a second surface layer which covers the first surface layer. The first surface layer is composed of more than one kind of metal oxide among ZrO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>, Y<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>and Sc<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>, and the thickness of the layer is 1 nm or more and 15 nm or less. The second surface layer is composed of carbon (C) and the thickness of the layer is 1 nm or more and 15 nm or less.
