An inorganic fiber which has a composition containing 71-80% by weight of SiO2, 18-27% by weight of CaO, 0-3% by weight of MgO, 1.1-3.4% by weight of Al2O3, not more than 0.1% by weight of ZrO2, not more than 0.1% by weight of R2O3 (wherein R is selected from among Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y and mixtures of these elements) and alkali metal oxides respectively in an amount of not more than 0.2% by weight, with the total of SiO2, CaO, MgO and Al2O3 being 99% by weight or more.
