According to one embodiment of the present invention, a light emitting element is provided with: a semiconductor laminate that contains a light emitting layer; a first upper electrode that is arranged on the semiconductor laminate and directly connected to the semiconductor laminate; at least one second upper electrode that is arranged on the semiconductor laminate, connected to the semiconductor laminate via a first contact layer, and extended from the first upper electrode; and a lower electrode that is arranged below the semiconductor laminate. The light emitting element is also provided with: a transparent conductive layer that is arranged between the semiconductor laminate and the lower electrode and transmits the light emitted from the light emitting layer; a light reflecting layer that is arranged between the transparent conductive layer and the lower electrode; and a current blocking layer that is arranged between the semiconductor laminate and the transparent conductive layer and/or between the semiconductor laminate and the first upper electrode and the second upper electrode, said current blocking layer being selectively provided with at least one slit when viewed from the direction that is perpendicular to the main surface of the light emitting layer.
