1,028,843. Disc brake pads. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 16, 1962], No. 6315/63. Heading F2E. [Also in Division B5.] A pad for a disc brake comprises a support member 10, for example of metal, provided with a hole 11 for fixing the pad to an actuating, fixing or guiding device, a friction lining 12, and a shielding member 13 integral with or separate from the support and positioned so as to constitute the bottom of the hole. In a method of making the pad, the support 10 is placed in the bottom of a moulding matrix 18, Fig. 3 (not shown), having a boss 22 on which the shielding member 13 is supported. A mass 23, e.g. constituted by compressed asbestos, thermohardening resins and metallic or mineral fillers is placed on the support 10 and is compressed by a press plate 21 until the latter comes into contact with the edge 20. During the compression the mould is heated. Adhesive may be spread on the support to improve fixing of the lining and may also be used to retain the shielding member in position. Alternatively, the shielding member may be held by other means, e.g. magnetic. A number of transverse slots 17 may be formed in the pad. In a number of modifications of shielding member, the latter is provided with one or more projections which engage in the hole 11 or which project beyond the surface of the support and become exposed when the lining is worn down to cause squeaking which acts as a warning to the user. A plug of friction material different from that of the lining, for example of graphite, may be incorporated in the lining and may also form the shielding member. The hole 11 may be formed by upsetting a portion of the support, the said portion forming the shielding member. |
