<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of miniaturizing a device by reducing the number of switching elements. <P>SOLUTION: The device comprises a first switching element Q1 for forming a closed circuit together with an alternating-current power source AC and a first inductor L1, and intermittently outputting energy from the first inductor L1 by switching on/off; a first capacitor C1 for storing an electric charge by the energy outputted from the first inductor L1; a second switching element Q2 connected to a load circuit including a discharge lamp 100 and the first capacitor C1, and supplying the electric charge stored in the first capacitor C1 to the discharge lamp 100 by switching on/off; and a control circuit 2 for controlling each of the switching elements Q1, Q2.
