Provided are: a highly efficient red phosphor and a production method for same; a white light source and an illumination device that are capable of pure white illumination by using the red phosphor; and a liquid crystal display device with good color reproduction properties. An element (A), europium (Eu), silicon (Si), carbon (C), oxygen (O), and nitrogen (N) are contained in the atomic ratios shown in compositional formula (1). (In compositional formula (1), element A is an element from Group 2 which includes at least calcium (Ca) and strontium (Sr). In addition m, x, y, and n fulfill the relationships 3<m<5, 0<x<1, 0<y<9, and 0<n<10.) The use of said red phosphor enables improved quantum efficiency, compared to red phosphors that include strontium (Sr) but not calcium (Ca) as the element (A). |
