<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an image forming apparatus that includes detection means for detecting an object to be detected on a belt. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises: a belt that is rotatable; detection means for detecting an object to be detected on the belt at a detection position; cartridges that are separated from the belt and attachable to and detachable from a device main body; and an opening/closing member capable of opening and closing for the device main body in order to attach and detach the cartridges to and from the device main body. In the apparatus that forms an image on a recording material by using the belt, at least a portion of the detection means at the detection position is located in space for attaching and detaching the cartridges. The detection means can move between a retreat position where the detection means has retreated from the space for attaching and detaching the cartridges and the detection position, and at least portion of the detection means at the retreat position is located in space formed by opening the opening/closing member for the device main body. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
