The method involves sending transmit pulse (4) using transmitting and receiving unit (2), and receiving echo pulses (7,24,25) on objects (6) in environment by reflection from transmit pulse, to provide received signal (9). The received signal for received echo pulses is evaluated to determine cause for generation of echo pulses from objects. The phase angle of periodic oscillations of received signal during or after terminating emission of transmit pulse are determined. The occurrence of phase jump is evaluated in response to reception of echo pulse during transmission of transmit pulse. An independent claim is included for apparatus for determining distance and/or space detection using pulse-echo analysis.
