<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly which has a frame provided in a membrane outer edge portion of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, and which is arranged to increase the bondability between the electrolyte membrane and the frame, to prevent the breakage at the interface thereof even under fuel battery's use environment, and to keep the effect of protecting the electrolyte. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly comprises: an anode catalyst layer 13 (anode); a cathode catalyst layer 15 (cathode); an ion conductive solid polymer electrolyte membrane 14; and a frame 104 formed from a nonionic-conductive porous resin base material. In the membrane electrode assembly, the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 14 is sandwiched between the anode and the cathode. The anode and the cathode are arranged to have a smaller area in comparison to the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 14. The frame 104 is provided on a membrane outer edge portion of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 14. Of the frame 104, an electrolyte membrane adhesion portion (electrolyte-containing layer 105) which borders the membrane outer edge portion is impregnated with an electrolyte resin. A portion of the frame 104 except the electrolyte membrane adhesion portion has a barrier layer 106, and has a fuel and oxidant permeability lower than that of the electrolyte membrane adhesion portion. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
