Textile materials of polyamide especially ladies' stockings are dyed or treated using an aqueous alkaline bath containing a phenol as swelling agent and an aliphatic anion-active compound. Suitable dyes are 2:1-metal complex, acid, substantive and especially disperse dyestuffs. The anion-active compound may be an alkali metal salt of a higher fatty acid such as is found in soft or grain soaps, sulphonated fatty acids and fatty alcohol sulphonates. Specified phenols are phenol, pyrocatechol and resorcinol. The preferred pH is 7-8 which is attained either by the soap itself or by the addition of sodium hydroxide or carbonate. Examples are given.
