PURPOSE: A washing machine and a controlling method thereof are provided to check the combination of a coupling unit to a clutch body unit or a rotor unit. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine comprises the following: a cam lever unit(40) connected to a clutch lever unit; a lift lever unit(50) contacting the cam lever unit; a coupling unit(60) moving by a lift lever unit, and combined to a rotor unit or a clutch body unit; and a sensor unit(90) measuring the distance with a magnetic unit located on the coupling unit.
