PURPOSE: A butt welding apparatus and a butt welding method are provided to keep the thickness of welding bead by controlling the speed of torch based on real time welding current and a target welding current. CONSTITUTION: A butt welding apparatus comprises a pair of steel sheet(W), a welding torch(3), a transporting carriage(5), a power source of electric welding(6), and controller(10). The welding torch projects a welding wire. The transporting carriage is moved along the welding torch. The power is supplied to the welding wire for forming a welding bead(B) in the opening portion. A current measuring unit measures the real time current during welding. The real time welding current and target current for obtaining even thickness of a welding bead are compared. The driving speed of the transporting carriage is set based for maintaining the thickness of welding bead evenly.
