<PICT:0924591/III/1> In the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons by contact with a combustion gas the combustion is effected by injecting, into the combustion chamber 1, fuel and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas through one or more sets of annular concentric nozzles 10 and 11 (Fig. 1) inclined so that the gases, injected at speeds of 50-350 m./sec. meet at an angle of 40-90 degrees to form a cylindrical flame, the combustion gases are passed through constriction 11, where the hydrocarbons are injected, into the reaction chamber 2, and the reactants are cooled. More than one set of nozzles may be used as shown in Fig. 4. Oxygen is preferably injected through the inner nozzle (11) and may be given a rotary motion by means of a helical guide in the annular feed pipe 4.
