A method and system for providing content to a user are provided, in which the user's interaction with the content allows a user profile to be updated so that future delivery of content can be optimised for that user. In a preferred embodiment, the content comprises a video item onto which one or more selectable alerts are overlaid. If the user selects these alerts then knowledge of this is used to update the user's profile, so that appropriate alerts are delivered next time the uses wishes to access a video item.
