摘要
930,388. Reducing iron ore. RICHARD THOMAS & BALDWINS Ltd. Dec. 19, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960; Aug. 18, 1961], Nos. 32442/60 and 29925/61. Class 72. A process for the reduction of iron ores comprises heating the ore mixed with carbon and limestone in an electric arc furnace, and injecting oxygen into the molten metal produced, the reducing gases evolved passing through theburden. As shown, a mixture of ore, carbon and limestone is added to an arc furnace 1 mounted on trunnions 9 and having electrodes 2 and retractable oxygen lances 13 which may be moved to a position 24 near the bottom of the furnace when oxygen is blown into the molten metal formed by the reduction of the ore. The tuyeres 14 for the lances are situated above the maximum level of molten metal in the furnace. The gases produced during the blowing pass through the burden above the molten metal and help in the reduction of the ore and the heat evolved during blowing allows a reduction in the amount of electric current supplied to the electrodes. The electrodes may pass through the trunnions, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 7, the furnace is rigidly mounted and has a stack 70 for the burden, metal and slag being removed through notches 81 and 80 respectively.
