Addition compounds of amino acids with hydrofluoric acid or neutral or acid soluble fluorides, and amino acid hydrofluorides obtained by hydrolysing albuminous substances with hydrofluoric acid are prepared by treating an amino acid, dry or in solution or suspension, with aqueous hydrofluoric acid or gaseous hydrogen fluoride, or by treating the amino acid with a neutral or acid soluble fluoride in a solvent such as water, or by hydrolysing the albuminous substance with hydrofluoric acid. A mixture of addition compounds of amino acids with neutral or acid soluble fluorides is obtained by hydrolysing an albuminous substance with hydrofluoric acid and at least partly neutralising with a metal hydroxide or carbonate. The products are used for the inhibition of dental caries. In examples (1) glycine; (2)sarcosine; (3) lysine and (4) alanine are treated with hydrofluoric acid to give the addition salts; (5) and (6) betaine is heated with aqueous potassium fluoride and with aqueous zirconium fluoride; (7) glycine is heated with stannic fluoride, to give the respective addition compounds and (8) wheat gluten is hydrolysed with hydrofluoric acid to give a mixture of addition compounds.ALSO:Preparations for the care of teeth and mouth such as tooth-pastes, mouth washes, tooth powders, dental soaps, tablets and solutions, comprise an addition compound of an amino acid (such as glycine, lysine, sarcosine or alanine) with hydrofluoric acid or a neutral or acid soluble fluoride, or a mixture of amino acid hydrofluorides such as is obtained by hydrolysing albuminous substances with hydrofluoric acid (see Group IV(b), in admixture with usual diluents such as polishing, filling or carrier substances. Examples describe a toothpaste comprising dicalcium phosphate or calcium carbonate, glycerine, tragacanth aroma substances, fatty alcohol sulphonate, betaine-potassium fluoride, water and methyl p-hydroxybenzoate; a tooth powder comprising dicalcium phosphate, colloidal kaolin, aroma substances, sodium lauryl sulphonate and sarcosine-monohydrofluoride; a mouth wash comprising ethyl alcohol, aroma substances, sodium sulphoricinoleate and lysine-potassium fluoride and a tablet comprising lactose, starch, gum arabic, magnesium stearate and glycine-potassium fluoride. |
