Supplements for the feeds of poultry, cattle, and other livestock to increase growth response and feed efficiency comprise mixtures of a first material prepared by fermenting wheat bran under aerobic conditions using Aspergillus oryzae and a second material prepared by fermenting wheat bran under aerobic conditions using Bacillus subtilis. The first material is made by steaming and wetting wheat bran, inoculating the bran with Aspergillus oryzae, exposing the inoculated wet bran to air, maintaining the temperature at 25-40 DEG C. and the r.h. at at least 95% for 40-75 hours, rewetting the fermented bran, allowing 40-60 hours additional fermentation at the same temperature and humidity, and finally air drying the bran at below 55 DEG C.; the second material is made by steaming and wetting wheat bran, inoculating the bran with Bacillus subtilis, exposing the inoculated wet bran to air, allowing fermentation for 30-60 hours at 25-45 DEG C. and r.h. at least 95%, and air drying the bran at below 55 DEG C. Amylolytic and proteolytic enzymes may be extracted from the second material, without loss of efficacy, by washing it with water. The relative proportions of the first and second materials may be 1 : 3 to 3 : 1. There are described tests with chicks on a diet of a barley, soybean meal, tallow, meat and bone scraps, fish meal, alfalfa meal, dried whey, distillers' solubles, bone meal, limestone, salt and a vitamin, mineral, &c. supplement containing Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, riboflavin, niacin, d-pantothenic acid, choline chloride, Vitamin B12, dl-methionine, butylated hydroxytoluene, Mn, Zn, I, Cu, Co and Fe, procaine penicillin and arsanilic acid, 4-16 lb. of the supplement mixture being incorporated into 1 ton of this diet. |
