A two column machine tool with one or more tool posts horizontally slidable on a vertically adjustable cross-slide comprises a measuring device fitted on the cross - slide between the columns for determining the cross-slide curvature, and a vertically operating tensioning device attached to the cross-slide adjacent the measuring device which is capable of lifting the crossslide by the amount of curvature. In a vertical lathe, Fig. 1, columns 3, 3, are connected by a bar 4, cross-slide 5 is vertically movable on the columns, and tool posts 6 are horizontally movable on slide 5. A straight edge 9 is supported at 10, 10 on the crossslide and carries a measuring device 15 which registers the curvature " a" of crossslide 5. Tensioning device 14 consists of a cable wound round a drum 25 which is motorized, the drum being fixed to a lifting head 26 which is vertically slidable on bar 4. Device 15 may be of the mechanical, magnetic, electrical, hydraulic or optical type, and may form part of an adjuster mechanism (not shown) which automatically converts the curvature measurement into a displacement of head 26. The measuring device, Fig. 2, is an electronic spirit level which measures the angle of curvature a and with the aid of a regulator, lifts head 26 to bring the angle to zero. In the vertical lathe, Fig. 3-6, straight edge 9 is supported on cross-slide 5 at 10, 10 and an auxiliary member 13 is supported by the slide and is linked to the latter by a tensioning device 14<SP>1</SP>. A measuring device 1511 consisting of a high sensitivity feeler such as a measuring clock with electrical contacts connected to a drive motor 22, is fitted to slide 5. Tensioning device 14<SP>1</SP> comprises a rod 23 pivoted to slide 5 at 24<SP>1</SP> and connected to an eccentric 18 of a gear-driven worm-wheel 19. As slide 5 bends due to movement of tool posts 6, clock 1511 measures the curvature and motor 22 is rotated to drive eccentric 18 thus lifting slide 5 by rod 23. It is stated that the tensioning device may consist of bolts or flat or ring wedges, and motor 22 may be replaced by electromagnetic clutches.</p>
