A spring structure is covered on both sides with rubberized fibrous material 2 the edges of which are clipped underneath the spring frame 3. A foam plastics sheet 5 is glued to each layer 2 and the edges are bent over the sides of the spring structure. The foam sheet 5 may be covered by a thin anti-friction layer 12 of cotton wool, synthetic fibre or a powder so that the mattress may be inserted easily into a ticking 15 by a side-wall type filling machine (see Fig. 3). Said machine includes a trough-shaped space to receive the upholstered springs and a power-operated filling spoon 11 to push the springs into a ready sewn ticking 14. A second changeable ticking may be provided.
