In the production of acetylene and ethylene by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon, a further amount of the same or a different hydrocarbon is added to the reaction mixture at a point before the oxygen in the mixture is used up prior to that at which the maximum temperature would have been reached, followed by quenching with water. The first hydrocarbon may be a C1-C12 hydrocarbon, the second, the same or different liquid or vaporous C1-C12 hydrocarbon added in an amount of 10-80% by weight of the reaction gas. The gas is thereby cooled to 500 DEG -1200 DEG C.
