A node 20 is configured for wireless communication with an access point 14 (e.g. for access to a wireless local area network (WLAN) according to IEEE 802.11e protocol) according to a differentiated services control parameter, e.g. a differentiated services code point (DSCP). The node 20 includes a controller 26 to provide individualized control of the differentiated services control parameter setting corresponding to the node 20. The controller 26 further receives data, assigns a priority level to the data (e.g. by performing a weighted sum calculation for the data), and adjusts the differentiated services control parameter setting for the node 20 based on the priority level. In one application, the node is a patient monitoring device and the data is physiological data acquired by the patient monitoring device.
