Phenol and acetone are produced by gradually adding a solution of cumene hydroperoxide in cumene of a concentration of at least 70% by weight and hydrochloric acid simultaneously to cumene or a previously decomposed solution of cumene hydroperoxide in cumene, the rate of addition of the acid being adjusted to cause its concentration in the reaction mixture to range between 0.1% and 1.1% by weight throughout the process. Hydrochloric acid may be employed in pure gaseous form or as a concentrated aqueous solution, e.g. of a concentration of 35 to 36% by weight. It is preferred to carry out the process continuously and to employ a reaction temperature of 30 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. On completion of reaction the reaction mixture is withdrawn, neutralised, the catalyst removed, and acetone, phenol and other compounds separated by distillation. Examples are furnished.
