Alkali lyes may be completely freed from sodium chloride and/or sodium sulphate, by dialysis using an ion-exchange membrane composed of a copolymer of styrene, styrene sulphonic acid, divinyl benzene and optionally acrylic acid. The membrane may be reinforced with fabric, or metal or glass fibres.ALSO:An ion-exchange membrane is composed of a copolymer of styrene, styrene sulphonic acid, divinyl benzene and optionally acrylic acid. The copolymer may be obtained by using a styrene sulphonic acid ester (e.g. propyl ester) with the ester groups being hydrolysed (e.g. with Na2CO3) after polymerization. Polymerization may be effected by mixing the monomers with a free-radical initiator (e.g. benzoyl peroxide) and then heating between two rubber-sealed sheets of glass. The membrane may be reinforced with fabric, or metal or glass fibres.
