An organic isothiocyanate is made by heating an organic isocyanate having no active hydrogen-containing substituents which are reactive with isocyanato groups with at least one molecule of carbon disulphide for each isocyanato group at a temperature of 100 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence as catalyst of 0.01 to 10.0% by weight, reckoned on the isocyanate, of a substituted phospholine having the formula: <FORM:0944529/C2/1> a substituted phospholidine having the formula: <FORM:0944529/C2/2> or a phosphonate ester having the formula: <FORM:0944529/C2/3> wherein a, b, c and d, each independently, represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbons, alkenyl group of 1 to 4 carbons, phenyl or cyclohexyl radical, or two together represent a polymethylene group which, together with two adjacent carbon atoms in the heterocyclic ring, forms a cycloaliphatic ring; R is an alkyl of 1 to 4 carbons or a phenyl radical, or a substituted phenyl radical in which the substituents are inert under the reaction conditions; and X, X1 and X11 are the same or different alkyl, alkenyl or halogen-substituted alkyl radicals containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Any organic isocyanate, including monoisocyanates and polyisocyanates, may be used, such as aromatic, aliphatic, and cycloaliphatic types, which may include halogen atoms, ether and thioether radicals, nitro groups and carbalkoxy groups.
