966,013. Inflating apparatus. B. F. GOODRICH CO. July 26, 1963 [Aug. 1, 1962], No. 29767/63. Heading F4P. A device for inflating life-saving apparatus from a compressed gas cartridge 14 comprises an aluminium housing 11 having a longitudinal bore 12 in which is slidably mounted a puncturing member 22 urged to the position shown by a compression spring 24 in which position air in the life-saving apparatus can vent to atmosphere through an outlet 19, a lateral passage 18, the longitudinal bore 12, grooves 27 in the member 22 and a venting passage 33. A lever 32 pivoted to a slotted end portion 11a of the housing 11 has a cam surface 32a, 32b which contacts a protruding end portion 28 of the puncturing member 22 so that operation of the lever moves the member 22 to puncture the cartridge 14 and then allows the member to partially retract under the action of the spring 24. An O-ring sealing element 30 of neoprene, natural or synthetic rubber disposed in an annular groove in the member 22 is positioned to the right of the venting passage 33 when the member 22 is in the puncturing or partially retracted positions and ensures that gas only passes to the outlet 19. A gasket 16 disposed between the housing 11 and the cartridge 14 may be of neoprene, nylon or rubber material.
|
