A method of operating a wireless signal repeater in a system comprising a donor antenna, an indoor antenna and the wireless signal repeater therebetween, the system providing an amplified UL (uplink) channel to the donor antenna when communication from a mobile device is detected on the Uplink channel, and reducing amplification in the Uplink channel that is delivered to the donor antenna when no communication is detected on the Uplink channel. The repeater monitors the uplink channel and only provides an amplified uplink channel to the donor antenna for subsequent transmission to the base station when a mobile device communication signal is detected on the uplink channel. In this way, the disruption to the mobile phone network is curtailed and it provides an opportunity for the operator to identify and rectify a problem in the network directly attributed to that repeater. Reducing the amplification of the UL channel may comprise: reducing the amplification of the UL channel to substantially zero (which may comprise redirecting the amplified UL channel to a load (e.g. open circuit UL channel) instead of the donor antenna); turning off the amplifier in the UL channel; providing a variable gain amplifier and reducing the amplification to a desired lower level than the maximum gain. |
