909,886. Making and filling egg cartons. LEHNERSTIRNEMANN, M. July 16, 1959 [June 11, 1959], No. 24426/59. Classes 18 and 94(1). Folding up cartons. The carton shown in Fig 2. is assembled in an inverted manner by feeding a prepared blank, Fig. 3, on to an apertured plate 34, Fig. 12. A yoke 75 then descends to contact the blank along each of its transverse bridge portions 19, Fig. 3, between partition flaps 18, to press the blank against the plate 34. Further downward movement of the yoke 75 forces the blank and the plate 34 downwardly against spring resistance, Fig. 13, and, at the same time, some fingers 44 (not shown) rise up through the apertures in the table 34 to erect the partition flaps 18, each partition flap being slotted at its mid-point 30. At this stage the sides of the blank are trapped between some members 88 co-operating with recesses in the yoke 75 to cause the blank to crease along the lines 24, 16 and 28, Fig. 3. The yoke 75 is then withdrawn and members 87, 88 are oscillated as shown in Figs. 14 and 15 to complete the carton by causing the side panels 15, 17, 29 to be swung inwardly over the box to close it such that slots 31 in the panel 29 engage the slots 30 in the portions 18. The completed box is then ejected from the machine and inverted to its correct position as shown in Fig. 2. Filling. The cartons are fed from the folding machine 2, Fig. 1, to filling devices 6 (not detailed) by continuously or intermittently operating conveyers 5. The eggs pass from a receptacle 7 to conventional light check means 8 from which they are fed by bands 9 to the fillers. The bands 9, also conventional, align the eggs so that their pointed ends will be directed downwards in the cartons. |
