[Also in Division F2] In a pair of meshing bevel gears the side of each tooth 14, Fig. 1, is a surface or revolution form-cut by rotating a tool about a stationary axis 23-24, Fig. 2 (Fig. 2 being a transverse section in the plane 15-17 of Fig. 1 perpendicular to line 15-16) so that each surface is convex in any plane which contains the axis of revolution 23-24, and concave in any plane therethrough perpendicular to said axis. The tooth surfaces are such that tangent point contact exists between mating tooth sides in every phase of mesh and that in one phase the contact is at a middle point of the tooth sides, the contacting sides in this phase being relatively convex in a plane containing the contact normal and the common cone apex of the gears. The Specification contains the necessary mathematical relationships to obtain such convexity. Preferably both sides of a tooth slot are formed about the same axis 23-24. The toothe profile may be involute or other shape, but is preferably of circular arc form as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,230,418. |
