In apparatus for drying tanned skins under heat and vacuum, means are provided for providing preselected pressures and friction to the skins whereby a particular skin can be so treated that the contraction of its fibres during the drying process is inhibited to a predetermined extent but not prevented. A tanned skin is dried under compression between a lower, fluid heated plate 1 and a movable upper plate 6 having a downwardly peripheral edge 7 and a layer 8 of permeable material spaced from the lower surface of the plate 6 by spacers 9 to form a chamber 10 in which a vacuum is created through a pipe 11 connected to a pump (not shown). Facings 14 of different heights are attached to the edge 7 to achieve a predetermined specific pressure on the skin by the layer 8 and the facings allow both the vacuum conditions in the chamber 10 to be regulated independently of the degree of pressure on the skin and also the pressure to be regulated independently of the vacuum so that horizontal components of tension are avoided. The layer 8 is of a material, e.g. sponge rubber, with a coefficient of friction which hinders but does not prevent contraction of the skin fibres.
