[Also in Division F4] In a method of evaporating salt or other impure water to provide steam for driving a turbine at least part of which is subsequently recovered in the form of pure water the salt water is sprayed through a nozzle 12 into an evaporating chamber 11 into which superheated steam is also introduced through a nozzle 15 in sufficient quantity to flash-evaporate the salt water spray. The resultant lower-temperature steam passes from the chamber 11 through a moisture and salt separator 19 to a blower 20 and passes therefrom at increased pressure through a reheating section 24 of a boiler 23. Part of the thus superheated steam flows through a line 34 to a turbine 28 driving an electric generator 29 and the remainder is recirculated through lines 26, 17 to the evaporating chamber 11. The exhaust steam from the turbine 28 is condensed in condenser 30 and the condensate, i.e. pure water, is recovered by a pump 32. At start-up superheated steam from a source not shown is introduced into the chamber 11 by valve 18 and line 16. Dry salt collects in the conical base of the chamber 11 and is discharged therefrom. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the total amount of steam from the evaporating chamber flows through the reheat section of the boiler and then directly to the turbines ; in this arrangement the superheated steam passing to the chamber 11 is produced from a part of the condensate which is fed to the boiler and re-evaporated and superheated therein. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a series of chambers are connected in cascade, the steam generated in one chamber flowing after reheating to the next chamber and so on. In this arrangement progressively increasing quantities of steam are generated and salt water evaporated in each succeeding evaporating chamber. The amount of pure water recoverable from the system therefore considerably exceeds the amount required for recirculation for steam for the first evaporating chamber.
