PURPOSE: A state information updating method in an instant messenger and portable terminal using the same are provided to automatically update state information related to the real state of a user without directly establishing the state information. CONSTITUTION: A control unit senses the movement of a portable terminal in a login state connected to an instant messenger(302). The control unit determines state information according to the movement of the sensed portable terminal(303). The control unit transmits the determined state information to an intermediate server(304). The control unit updates the state information of the portable terminal by using the determined state information(305).
