MOTION ESTIMATION APPARATUS AND METHOD USING PREDICTION ALGORITHM BETWEEN MACROBLOCKS

PURPOSE: A motion estimating device using a prediction technique between macro blocks and a method thereof are provided to drastically reduce a memory bandwidth by a structure of omitting an access to an external memory. CONSTITUTION: An SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) converting unit(233) calculates a prediction SAD value about No. 2 macro block. The prediction SAD value is based on a prediction motion vector. A reference SAD calculating unit(235) calculates a reference SAD value about macro blocks around No. 2 macro block. A comparison unit(237) compares the reference SAD value with the prediction motion vector from which a fixed threshold value is subtracted. The comparison unit selectively estimates a normal motion vector about No. 2 macro block according to the comparison result.
