PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to prevent light leakage in a black state. CONSTITUTION: A pixel electrode(138) is formed on the inner surface of a first substrate(120). The pixel electrode is connected to a thin film transistor. A common electrode(156) is formed on the inner surface of either one of the first substrate or a second substrate(150). First and second polarizing plates(182,184) are located on the external surfaces of the first and second substrates. A dichromatic dye(174) absorbs light whose wavelength is in the range of 380 to 550 nm. The dichromatic dye is added to a liquid crystal layer(170).
