[Also in Division D1] A tufted fabric suitable for carpets is made by covering a base fabric 1 with at least one layer 2 of wet strength paper, polyethylene or polypropylene, applying a tufting yarn 3 in a conventional manner and impregnating the backing layer 1 with a binder 4. Suitable backing materials are woven or non-woven jute or cotton and suitable tufting yarns are cotton, rayon, wool, nylon or mixtures thereof and the tufts 3 may be cut or uncut. Suitable binders are latex, polyvinyl acetate, butadiene-styrene copolymers or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers. The wet strength paper may be reinforced with rayon or fibreglass filaments. The layer 2 may or may not be bonded to the base fabric 1 before tufting, e.g. by an adhesive such as polyvinyl acetate or by heat sealing in the case of polyethylene or polypropylene.</p> |
