An adhesive composition comprises an admixture in aqueous dispersion of an incompletely condensed phenolic resin and a copolymer of a conjugated diene and an unsaturated ketone, the copolymer containing 0.2 to 10% of the unsaturated ketone. Specified conjugated dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 2-3-dimethylbutadiene, piperylene, 1-phenyl-butadiene, 2-phenylbutadiene and 2-neopentyl butadiene. Specified ketones are methyls ethyl or propyl, vinyl ketones and methyl, ethyl or isopropyl, isopropenyl ketones, while an alkali-soluble resorcinol-formaldehyde resin is the preferred phenolic resin and may be prepared by dissolving resorcinol in water and adding a water-soluble alkali (sodium hydroxide), then formaldehyde and then storing for a few hours.ALSO:Fibres of polyamides e.g. nylon and polyesters e.g polyethylene glycol terephthalate, rayon and cotton are bonded to rubber by treating the fibres with an adhesive composition comprising an admixture in aqueous dispersion of an incompletely condensed phenolic resin and a copolymer of a conjugated drene and an unsaturated ketone, the copolymer containing 0.2 to 10% of the unsaturated ketone (see Division C3), drying and then embedding the cords in an unvulcanized rubber composition and curing. Examples are given of the treatment of nylon cord preferably 2/4/210 denier nylon.
|
