Disclosed is an imaging agent suitable for in vivo optical imaging of the mammalian body which comprises a conjugate [BTM]-(L).-Cy13 where: BTM is a synthetic biological targeting moiety which is chosen from: (a) a 3-100 mer peptide; (b) an enzyme substrate, enzyme antagonist or enzyme inhibitor; (c) a receptor-binding compound; (d) an oligonucleotide; (e) an oligo-DNA or oligo-RNA fragment; CyD is a cyanine dye of Formula (II).
