Wall proximity reclining chair with in-line linkage mechanism

A mechanism (32) to manually recline a chair in use and provide several adjustment means for a leg rest support is disclosed. The mechanism includes side plates (58, 60) with polymeric inserts (72, 73) and elongated slots (75, 75') to receive a pin (74, 74') to guide angle of rotation. Seat back support elements (62, 64) are coupled to the side plate and linked to the pin to allow rotation in unison. A rearward force applied by an occupant to the back support rotates them rearward with pins sliding within the elongated slots. When the rearward force is removed the occupant's weight returns the support elements to a pre-rotation position. Leg rest support arms (36, 37) are connected by a pantograph linkage set (34, 35) to a drive rod (78) positioned through the side plates. A cam (98) can be manually adjusted to support varied leg weights of occupants on the leg rest. A release latch or lever located on the side of the chair allows the user to position the leg rest between a stowed and extended position.
