A system for treating sleep disordered breathing during successive treatment sessions is disclosed. The system provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep. The system comprises a blower (8) and a blower controller (6); a mask (18) for communicating pressurized air between the blower and a patient; and at least one sensor (28, 30, 32) for sensing signals indicative of pressure and flow. The at least one sensor is a motor speed sensor or a motor current sensor, and delivering the signals to the blower controller. The blower controller controls a first constant treatment pressure to be applied during a first ventilation session; detects and records apnea and hypopnea events during the first ventilation session based on the at least one sensor; calculates a breathing index dependent upon the recorded apnea and hypopnea events; and delivers a second constant treatment pressure in a second ventilation session for the patient. The second constant treatment pressure is determined by comparing the breathing index to a threshold. |
