952,843. Electric motors. F. W. PLEUGER, [trading as PLEUGER & CO.]. June 30, 1960 [July 4, 1959], No. 23016/60. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions E1 and F1 A submersible pump is driven by a submersible electric motor arranged above the pump inside or separate from a discharge pipe, the housing of the pump, which may be varied to suit the medium (such as sewage, water or sludge) being pumped, being detachably connected to the motor and the motor being enclosed by a vertical cartridge-like housing which contains a replaceable stator. As shown in Fig. 1, the pump casing 29 is bolted at flanges 28 to an outer casing 27 enclosing the motor casing 4. The pumped liquid cools the motor as it. passes through the annular space between the casings 4, 27 on its way to the outlet 34, cooling ribs 5 being provided on casing 4. The easing 4 is filled with a liquid such as oil, compensation for the breathing volume of this liquid being provided by a chamber 15 partly filled with the liquid, with an air cushion in the chamber above the liquid. An air vent pipe 13 is sealed by a bolt 14. The sewage pump shown in Fig. 2 comprises the same motor casing 4 as in Fig. 1 but the outer casing 27 is omitted, a cover 40 and a bearing housing 41 being attached by tie bolts 42. The impeller 44 is a single-duct type suitable for handling sewage. The pump is lowered on chains 50 to engage the conical bearing housing 41 with the conical surface 49 of a stationary casing 45 containing the inlet and outlet of the pump. Before this is done, deposits on the surface 49 are removed by passing water through holes 53 from an annular chamber 51 which is supplied with water under pressure through a pipe 52.
