The invention relates to sliding windows of the kind having a catch bar 14 which extends across the window transverse to the direction of sliding movement, is pivotally attached to a frame or to an edge-rail forming part of the window for movement about an axis extending lengthwise of the bar and has at one or each end a catch member which makes holding engagement with an abutment 4 on a fixed outer frame member, the bar also having a radial projection providing means by which such pivotal movement may be effected by manual operation. According to the invention, the catch bar has a section of V-form comprising two radially extending limbs and a rounded base, the latter either being received within and held by a bearing surface on the frame or rail or fitting over and bearing on a rounded head on the frame or tail and the limbs being at such an angle one to the other than one limb 16 which constitutes the projection projects outwardly from the face of the window, and the other limb 17 which provides or carries the catch member extends in the general direction of sliding movement of the window and is 'movable by pivoting of the bar. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1, in which a window pane 1 is slidable in a fixed frame 3, the pane is provided with a top bar 2 having a longitudinally extending groove 8 bounded on one side by a wall 9 having a beaded edge 10 which latter serves to pivot the catch bar 14, the limb 16 of which serves as a finger grip and the other limb 17 of which makes latching engagement at its ends with the abutment 4 attached to the fixed frame. A step 12 formed on the top bar 2 provides a second fixed finger grip. The catch bar is biased to latching position by a coil spring located in a cut away portion of the bead 10. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, the bead 10 is replaced by a retaining wall 11 a of the top bar. The catch bar which is provided with springs 20 is also provided in the region of its centre portion with a finger grip of hard plastics.
