Method for enabling the use of a consumable unit (107) containing a consumable medium in a consumption device (102.6) of a consumption arrangement (102), in particular a franking machine, in which in a first transmission step (110.4) a first item of authorisation information assigned to the consumable unit (107) is transmitted by a data processing unit (102.1) of the consumption arrangement (102) via a communications network (105) to a remote data centre (106), in a first verification step (110.5) in the data centre (106) a verification of the first item of authorisation information takes place, in an authorisation step (110.7) in the data centre (106) as a function of the outcome of the first verification step (110.5) a second item of authorisation information assigned to the consumable unit (107) is generated, in a second transmission step (110.15) the second item of authorisation information is transmitted via a communications network to the data processing unit (102.1), in a second verification step in the data processing unit (102.1) a verification of the second item of authorisation information takes place and in an enabling step (110.19) in the data processing unit (102.1) as a function of the outcome of the second verification step (110.18) enabling of use of the consumable unit (107) in the consumption device (102.6) takes place. Here in an accounting step (110.11) as a function of the outcome of the first verification step (110.5) and/or of the second verification step (110.18) an accounting for enabling of use of the consumable unit (107) in the consumption device (102.6) takes place, wherein the accounting step (110.11) takes place provided that in an ascertainment step (110.10) of the first verification step (110.5) it is ascertained that the consumable unit (107) was previously unused.
