摘要 Biologically readily decomposable monoalkyl benzene sulphonates are prepared by reacting a monoalkyl benzene alone with an excess of sulphuric acid of 96% to 105% concentration at a temperature from 60 DEG to 95 DEG C. and subsequently neutralizing the monoalkyl benzene sulphonic acid produced, the excess of sulphuric acid employed being not greater than 150%. The sulphonation is preferably initiated at 60 DEG to 75 DEG C. and completed at 80 DEG to 85 DEG C. Examples are given of the sulphonation of tetrapropylene benzene, and a dodecyl benzene produced by the reaction of benzene with a straight-chained dodecyl chloride in the presence of aluminium chloride, by conventional procedures and by the process of the invention.
