<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a miniaturized head maintenance device that includes at least a first cap, a second cap, and a wiping member with different functional objectives by reducing the number of driving sources. <P>SOLUTION: The head maintenance device includes: first and second gears which are driven by rotation with one motor and are constituted so that one of them is rotated by a switching means, and the other is not rotated; a third gear which is rotated to move a suction cap between an abutting position for abutting with a liquid ejecting head and a separating position for separating from the liquid ejecting head; a fourth gear which is rotated to move a wiping member between a start position for starting wiping of the liquid ejecting head and a finish position for finishing the wiping; and a fifth gear which is rotated to move an abandoned cap between the abutting position for abutting with the liquid ejecting head and the separating position for separating from the liquid ejecting head.
