The ability to back up and restore data within the environment of a distributed database system is provided. The actions include initiating an operation for backing up a distributed database between a plurality of nodes and coordinating the synchronization of the back-up operation within and between the plurality of nodes for the local and parallel dumping of data with transactional consistency towards a single point in time.
