<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a telescopic shaft that has a coated part for reducing sliding resistance, reduces a variation of the sliding resistance generated in a sliding position of the telescopic shaft, and is improved in the lubrication performance of a lubricating fluid. <P>SOLUTION: In the coated part 61, there is formed an escape 613 so that the tooth face 412 in the vicinity of the tooth tip 411A of a tooth groove 41 of a female shaft 16B may not abut on the coated part 61 of the tooth face in the vicinity of a tooth root of a protrusive tooth 51. An intermediate shaft 16 is running-in operated, and an amount for compressing and elastically deforming the coated part 61 is 1-10μ. Accordingly, it is preferable that an escape amount α1 of the escape 613 before the coated part 61 is elastically deformed by imparting compression stress to the coated part 61 is not smaller than 10μ.
