<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for performing efficient location updates of an MTC (machine type communication) terminal by providing a terminal specific idle mode timer and location update types with consideration for mobility types and traffic patterns of the MTC terminal in an MTC environment. <P>SOLUTION: A method of allowing a terminal to perform a location update in an idle mode in a wireless access system comprises the steps of: receiving, from a base station, a machine-to-machine (M2M) terminal specific idle mode timer; and performing a location update based on the received M2M terminal specific idle mode timer.
