A die and plunger type box erecting machine comprises a reciprocating drive means for moving a plunger 12 into a blank folding die, a pneumatic piston 68 and cylinder 66 between the drive means and the plunger, and an hydraulic piston 85-86 and cylinder 67 containing an inner cylinder 77 arranged in parallel with the pneumatic cylinder. This arrangement obviates the necessity for adjusting the force and motion transmitting device when blanks of different size are erected. Details of the driving means are disclosed in Specification 901,591. The pneumatic cylinder, which is divided into two chambers by the plunger, has its upper chamber 71 vented to the atmosphere, and its lower chamber 72 sealed by a check valve sealing a passage 75 when sub-atmospheric pressure exists in the chamber 72 and open to vent when above-atmospheric pressure exists. During the work stroke atmospheric pressure acting on the top side of the piston 68 pushes the piston downward inside the cylinder 66, and this motion is unrestricted during the initial portion of the stroke and is restrained as soon as the rod piston 86 enters the inner cylinder 77 of the hydraulic unit. The cylinder 77 has means forming a restricted passage for discharging liquid at a controlled rate when the volume is being reduced and a valve means 79-80 provided for admitting liquid when the volume of the chamber is being enlarged. The box blank has its sides S folded against the plunger by folding elements 14 and 15, glue applied to flaps F by applicators 23 which also prefold the flaps at an angle to the side panels so that upon entry of the blank into the die, the flaps F overlie the end surfaces of the plunger, and end panels E lie thereover and become adhesively secured thereto. In a modification the cylinder and piston type may be of the rotary design in which a pivoted vane-piston divides a substantially sector shaped cylinder into the chambers. |
