Provided is the structure of a support device for a steering column in which it is possible to readily perform tuning in order to cause a stable forward displacement of a steering wheel during a secondary collision; to lower and stabilize the separation load; and, as required, to prevent the steering wheel from descending excessively after the secondary collision. An engaging thin portion (27) is formed in the longitudinal direction on a vehicle body-side bracket (11a). Upper and lower sliding plate portions (31a, 31b), provided to outside and inside slide unit plates (51, 52) constituting a slide member (28), are arranged so as to flank both side portions of the engaging thin portion (27). A bolt (29) and a nut (30) passing through the sliding plate portions (31a, 31b) from above join an upper plate portion (23) of a column-side bracket (12b) to the vehicle body-side bracket (11a). During a secondary collision, the outside slide element (51) slides forwards relative to the inside slide unit plate (52), and the column-side bracket (12b) separates from the vehicle body-side bracket (11a) at a gentle force.
